For Our Clients: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Specialist?
A specialist is a veterinarian who is board certified in a clinical discipline recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Board of Veterinary Specialties including surgery, anesthesia, internal medicine, cardiology and radiology. To first qualify for this status in surgery, and only following graduation from veterinary school, a doctor must successfully complete an additional three years of concentrated residency training at an accredited institution. Residency responsibilities include specific didactic and procedure-based training as well as clinical caseload experience under the direction of recognized experts within the field. In addition, the candidate must also demonstrate meaningful contributions to veterinary science by peer-reviewed publication of original research. When training program requirements have been completed, a resident must then successfully pass a rigorous written, practical and oral examination. Only after these professional accomplishments have been met does a residency-trained veterinarian become “board certified” and earn the title of Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).

Do I need a referral?
We believe strongly in a team approach to your pet's health. While referrals aren't always necessary, you should discuss your interest in referral to Veterinary Surgical Specialists of Scottsdale with your primary veterinarian.

What costs can I expect on my first visit?
The cost of a pet's evaluation is sometimes difficult to estimate before seen by our Group. While there is an initial, one-hour consultation fee of $130.00, an itemized estimate will be provided before any additional diagnostic testing or treatments are performed. Payment is due in full as services are provided. Payments may be made with cash, check or credit card. For your convenience, VSSS accepts the following: MasterCard, Visa, American Express, or Discover.

What will I need to bring with me?
On your first visit to VSSS, please bring any previous medical history, all current medications including dose/frequency, results of laboratory testing and pertinent diagnostic imaging (x-rays, CT, MR) for your pet. A complete medical background may help avoid any duplication in diagnostic testing.
