A specialist is a veterinarian who is board certified in a clinical discipline recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Board of Veterinary Specialties. Only with accredited residency training, extensive clinical caseload experience, peer-reviewed publication of research and through formal examination processes does a veterinarian earn the title of Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS).
Animal owning clients - when patients themselves - may routinely consult with and be cared for by physician specialists, and are familiar with the concept of healthcare specialization, the referral process and anesthesia.
